The Party of Limbaugh

Monday, 2nd March 2009

There's a reason Rahm Emanuel is happy to agree with Rush Limbaugh's assertion that he, the Great Rushbo, is the de facto leader of the Republican opposition: Limbaugh turns off middle-class, middle of the road voters. An Obama vs Limbaugh battle is not one the White House is going to lose. Indeed it's hard to think of a better way for the Republican party to marginalise itself and reinforce the impression, held by many voters, that it's little more than a rump of pop-eyed angry white men. This impression may be inaccurate but there you have it. David Frum is, as you might expect, depressed by this:

Rush knows what he is doing. The worse conservatives do, the more important Rush becomes as leader of the ardent remnant. The better conservatives succeed, the more we become a broad national governing coalition, the more Rush will be sidelined.

But do the rest of us understand what we are doing to ourselves by accepting this leadership? Rush is to the Republicanism of the 2000s what Jesse Jackson was to the Democratic party in the 1980s. He plays an important role in our coalition, and of course he and his supporters have to be treated with respect. But he cannot be allowed to be the public face of the enterprise – and we have to find ways of assuring the public that he is just one Republican voice among many, and very far from the most important.

Doubtless this will lead to the usual complaints that Frum's a fraud, a sell-out and an intellectual snob. All this could be true and none of it would prohibit Frum being right.

The way Rush goes on, you'd think he was pilled up or something.

Well done Alex you're fast becoming the best British blog to follow the disintegration of The Republican party and you attract insightful comments and analysis from the likes of ndm, Ronnie & Craig Strachan.

I'm sure you all saw this but it deserves repeating.

Rush Limbaugh makes no sense at all at CPAC.

"One thing we can all do is stop assuming that the way to beat the Democrats is with better policy ideas,"

He said this to attack Newt, The circular firing squad has begun in earnest, I wonder who will be the last man standing?

There's a strange but undeniable confluence of interests between Obama and Limbaugh, at present. Both want Rush to be the biggest star in the GOP. The only party that loses out, here, of course, is the GOP.

I think a lot of US conservatives would like secretly to be rid of those two porcine windbags Rush and Newt (just as many liberals would love to see the last of Michael Moore and Al Franken). They aren't party leaders - they're self-promoting, spotlight-hogging buffoons. But somehow they keep bobbing to the surface like...like...what's the simile I'm after?

I think, as usual, the UK press misreads Middle America, and its inherent conservatism. Rush Limbaugh has a significant audience, which the neocons decided to ignore. The results of that decision are now abundantly evident.

Mr. Limbaugh is bombastic, etc., and is no angel. But he is not stupid, and has for two decades pegged the Democrats for who they are--childish, self-indulgent, dishonest, and amoral.

They ridicule him, lambast him, hate him, etc.

Mainly they fear him, and rightly so.

He has their number, and encourages us to laugh at them.

Can't wait for Limbaugh to have to address him as 'Senator' Al Franken.

Old South - perhaps you are correct to think I'm misreading the "inherent conservatism" of Middle America. But I'd look at the electoral map and see that Obama won Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa - all good, solid, middle-American states.

And he also won the emerging battlegrounds in Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico - states with growing populations that are going to be more, not less, important in future elections. Add in his victories in Virginia (which seems likely to continue to trend Democratic) and New Hampshire (ditto) plus North Carolina and you have an electoral map that looks very bad for the GOP.

Now, of course, a less politically savvy Democrat running in less propitious times for the party might not hold all these gains. Still, with demographic trends favouring the Democrats that may matter less.

A Republican will win the White House again, but he may need to lead a rather different Republican party and the GOP's hopes of being the "natural" part of government, let alone achieving Karl Rove's "permanent Republican majority" seem awfully distant and unlikely right now.

Limbaugh's "unfavourables" are much higher than his "favourable" rating. This makes him an odd choice to be standard-bearer...

Rush also said in his peak wingnut speech at CPAC

"We believe that the preamble to the Constitution contains an inarguable truth that we are all endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, among them life. [Applause] Liberty, Freedom. [Applause] And the pursuit of happiness. [Applause] Those of you watching at home may wonder why this is being applauded. We conservatives think all three are under assault. [Applause] Thank you. Thank you. "

You’d think that such a self-proclaimed great patriot and defender of American liberty as Limbaugh would know the difference between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, but apparently not. -Doh

Reminds me of that great scene in the West Wing when Toby gets into a slanging match with the Christianist wingnuts because they drop anti Semitic code and don't even know their bible and the ten commandments

"TOBY
"Honor thy Father" is the Third Commandment.

VAN DYKE
Then what’s the First Commandment?

PRESIDENT JED BARTLET
"I am the Lord your God. Thou shalt worship no other God... More"

Written by one of the most liberal writers in Hollywood. Don't get me wrong, The West Wing is my favourite TV show but it means bugger all as a balanced insight into the american political world. And BTW, it was only one of the 2wingnuts" who confused the commandment, not all three of them. You're reporting is almost as balanced as Alex Massie.

Cabbie I was comparing The big fat idiot confusing his Constitution with his Declaration of Independence and the Christianist wingnuts confusing their Biblical quotes but you knew that and it was a a chance to watch some WW scenes on YouTube, never a chore. I agree it not exactly balanced insight but like you I love the West Wing Iv'e been mulling over buying the complete box set it's only £50 on Amazon.

Don't know if you ever saw this during the election fray but this is fun, Aaron Sorkin wrote up a meeting between in Obama and Bartlet in the NYT

Yes I saw that, Sorkin (despite his politics) is an amazing writer. Within, the first few sentences he brings Bartlet back to life.

On Limbaugh's confusion, why are you so shocked? After all, Barack Obama thinks there's 57 states. Might it be possible that even the cleverest make mistakes from time to time?

Are you saying that Obama is not in chargs of his faculties when the pressure is on? Not sure that's appropriate for a President. That probably explains why he keeps on having holidays.

Jon Stewart to me is like Limbaugh is to you - a grade A pillock.

Doesn't say if it was gay or straight which is a shame. Gotta mean somethin' though don't you think? Perhaps after a couple of hours of Rush on the Radio you need to cleanse yourself with something more wholesome like a bit of teen porn.

"That probably explains why he keeps on having holidays." "W" spent more time cutting brush in Crawford than he did in the Whitehouse. C'mon Jon Stewart is much funnier than the big fat idiot and I doubt Rush is going to be hosting the Oscars anytime soon.

Rush Limbaugh is to Republicans as Jesse Jackson is to Democrats? Are you kidding me? Even in the limited analogy framework, Frum's association only proves his idiocy and his offensive contempt for progressive causes. Jesse Jackson twice ran for President, was part of the Civil Rights movement, and has been a vibrant and consistent social justice activist and advocate. Rush Limbaugh is a loudmouth ignoramus who has done nothing to improve this world. Philosophers would show that this is a false analogy; moralists would highlight these folks are not moral equivalents; reasonable thinkers would recognize Frum's backward thinking; and everyone should be offended by this association as well as be embarrassed by Frum's very fuzzy thinking.

Also, word on Rush is that he hates Steele so much, someone stated that Rush made some very racial statements, very hateful, about Michael Steele being the RNC chair...Rush is such a meanspirited man...no surprise

What a dis-appointment Mr Steele has become.. I think we all had high hopes and now he has become just another Liberal trying to wear conservative clothes - he made the same mistake as many others that the Republican party is also the Conservative party - we seem to be getting further apart because of people like Steele - Go Rush - you seem to be about the only thing that holds my sanity together
