Lock Up Your Children Before Obama Brainwashes Them...

Thursday, 3rd September 2009

Golly. Looks like Barack Obama is taking his campaign of intimidation to a whole new level.

In a recent interview with student reporter, Damon Weaver, President Obama announced that on September 8 -- the first day of school for many children across America -- he will deliver a national address directly to students on the importance of education. The President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents and educators to ensure that every child in every school receives the best education possible so they can compete in the global economy for good jobs and live rewarding and productive lives as American citizens.
Now some of the language in the accompanying (but optional) assignments was inartfully and even foolishly worded since it talked about "helping the President" and so on. That's been amended, even if conservatives are in no real position to criticise the Cult of the Presidency since they believe in it too, (though only when there's a Republican in the Oval Office).

Then again, take a look at this reaction:

Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today released the following statement condemning President Obama's use of taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate America's children to his socialist agenda.

"As the father of four children, I am absolutely appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama's socialist ideology. The idea that school children across our nation will be forced to watch the President justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies, increasing taxes on those who create jobs, and racking up more debt than any other President, is not only infuriating, but goes against beliefs of the majority of Americans, while bypassing American parents through an invasive abuse of power.

"While I support educating our children to respect both the office of the American President and the value of community service, I do not support using our children as tools to spread liberal propaganda. The address scheduled for September 8, 2009, does not allow for healthy debate on the President's agenda, but rather obligates the youngest children in our public school system to agree with our President's initiatives or be ostracized by their teachers and classmates."

Well! I'm not surprised that Rod Dreher wonders if Republicans "are losing their minds". But it's a sign of the times that something lke this - uncontroversial, I believe, when George HW Bush did something similar - should be a matter for Outrage. (Not that things would necessarily be much better if John McCain had triumphed last November.)

UPDATE: Rod has more here.

The use of the word 'Golly', at the start of this article, should wind up the PC brigade nicely!

I'm trying to understand why it would be wrong for a government figure to justify his or her policies.

They surely aren't arguing that once elected, politicians should just shut up?

What was the purpose of this post?
Your unfortunate tendency to sneer we already know about, but this appears to be apropos of nothing in particular

Obama's 'Dear Leader' attempt to influence schoolchildren will surely backfire, despite the late correction to the 'instruction packs' for teachers. The Rasmussen polls indicate that the USA may be waking up to their electoral folly: http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/daily_presidential_tracking_poll

You really do have a tendency to be condescending and a tad 'catty' in your posts.

This is not the first incident of Obama and his administration trying to guide and 'nudge' opinion and debate in their favour. Their recent attempt to use the NEA as a mouth piece for their policies, most notably on health care, was mis-guided at best. It's one thing to use propaganda and 'nudging' in a campaign, but it's wrong to assume that the same tactics will be tolerated whilst in office. It is abuse of the system, and borderline coercion of people.

Also, why have so many parents already commented in the US that they will be withdrawing their children from school on that day if this is simply a harmless address?

Are you suggesting mass histeria on the part of these parents?

OK, let's see...perhaps it is because the only job Obama ever did that had anything like executive responsibility prior to becoming President was as a board member of the Annenberg Foundation, a far-left educational "charity" which had the explicit aim of spreading socialist ideology to schoolchildren. Or perhaps because his intellectual mentor and political sponsor Bill Ayers has written many books and given many speeches advocating the spreading of socialist ideology to schoolchildren. And perhaps because many of the people Obama has hired since his inauguration are active advocates of spreading socialist ideology to schoolchildren. And perhaps because the school guides developed by the White House to go with the speech seem to advocate spreading socialist ideology to schoolchildren. And perhaps because the teacher's unions, who have already managed to persuade Obama to kill school choice in Washington DC, are eager advocates of spreading socialist ideology to schoolchildren. But of course, no, none of these things can be true because Mr Massie is such a keen observer of American life that he can see through things that only stupid Republicans could possibly believe.

Further to that, have a look at the original version of the teaching pack prepared by the White House, with the revised second version

http://campaignspot.nationalreview.com/

Looks like the White House really was intending to use this an exercise in spreading socialist ideology, until they were caught out by protests by slabbering morons like Jim Greer.

As published by the not-half-as-clever-as-Mr-Massie lugheads at the National Review.

Grassmarket:
If I may add one more community to the list of propaganda recruits the Community-Organizer-in-Chief has coopted for "outreach": the religious. Rabbis and pastors have been told to spread the word to their congregations on the moral imperative to be thy brother's keeper and support his healthcare reform.
Next community with a captive audience: prisons. Obama to talk about repentance, second chances and enfranchising felons.

THX1183: The whole of America is now attending Obama Camp.

Sometimes you have to take a long hard look at the GOP to see the reality of their peers on this side of the pond.

The nice thing about modern Republicans is that they highlight the awfulness of the Right Wing wherever they are.

It's probably been pointed out before, but conservatives have been engaging a lot in projection. They are constantly accusing the other side of what they themselves are guilty of. They deny the past. They have no workable ideas. In general they are just intellectually bankrupt.
