Many thanks to Iain Dale for digging up this Tory poster from 1929. Prescient and useful though it may be, I cannot share his confidence that the Conservatives will be very much better. That is, we may modestly expect an improvement in degree but not in kind. Alas. Here, at least, is an opportunity for the Tories to surprise us. In a good way. That's the optimistic take, anyway.

October 20th, 2009 3:20pm Report this commentI am looking forward to the dismantling of this snooping bully-state, but until the Tories promise to repeal the nearly two hundred laws that allow agencies to enter your home, I will not have much confidence in their commitment. Why is the British public not clamouring for a restriction on the powers of these bureaucrats ? It is obscene when you consider how many agencies can apply for access to your home.

October 20th, 2009 5:03pm Report this commentDavid Cameron has made all the right noises on ID cards and the database state. But we wait for the proof, what happens after the Tories get into power. I say Cameron will come under pressure from ACPO to 'let them get on with their job'. When a previous Tory government cut the trade unions back other forms of pressure group, like ACPO, were left untouched, this was a mistake.

October 21st, 2009 3:47am Report this commentCameron doesn't want to do anything about this because his instincts are Blairite. He is a statist with a pleasant front.
Why hasn't he announced that the Conservatives will bring in a Great Repeal Bill?
If you expect small government from Cameron, and are not satisfied with tiny improvements, then you will be disappointed.
