I'm a monarchist- and much more keenly so than I was as a young chap - but the way this Daily Mail story is written is so ghastly and gawd-help-us that it almost makes one doubt the sense of having a non-elected head of state...
Prince Philip has been spotted doing his bit for the environment - by clearing up litter at Sandringham.
The Duke of Edinburgh prince surprised onlookers by bending down to pick up a discarded coffee cup and its plastic lid after church on the Royal estate in Norfolk.
The 88-year-old prince did his good deed while walking back to Sandringham House after the traditional morning service at St Mary Magdalene Church on Sunday.
Some spectators gasped when they saw him suddenly lurch forward and feared that he was about to take a fall.
But it soon became clear the still-sprightly royal was determined to do his bit to Keep Britain Tidy by picking up the cup.
Eagle-eyed Philip, wearing his favourite long brown coat, then bent down a second time to pick up the plastic lid that was lying on the grass nearby.
He was seen carrying the litter away, although it is not known if he handed the cup and lid to an aide or put them in a bin himself.
What a hero!

January 26th, 2010 11:09am Report this commentI'm a royalist, too, but mainly because the alternative is to elect a politician as President. I have a feeling, though, that Charles is going to try my patience.

I think it's more likely to make us doubt the benefit of having a dumbed down soporific media personally. Good on him for doing it, but why this is news is beyond me which I think was your point.

January 26th, 2010 11:59am Report this commentI quite agree. This sort of nonsense takes column inches away from all those important pieces about Obama and his family, his wife's clothes sense, his dog, where he goes on holiday, his attenpts at surfing etc. Now that's real news - apparently.

January 26th, 2010 12:20pm Report this commentI'm neither a republican or a royalist: both having Charlie Boy as head of state, or replacing him with an elected President sound bad to me. What about a compromise? We'll have a revolution -- lets call it GRII -- and force him to flee to America, where he'll be loved as all monarchs are, and replace him with Good King Will.

January 26th, 2010 5:11pm Report this commentI'm with Conservative Cabbie all the way on this story. Turning a non-event into a 100-word piece is utterly crap journalism - although I don't expect much from a rag that publishes the thoughts of Chairman Mel on a regular basis.

I think the British media pays far too much attention to the comings and goings in the United States. But then I also think American public television pays far too much attention to the British Royal Family.

January 26th, 2010 5:42pm Report this commentSurely there is a different message to be picked up from this? The importance of cleaning up litter has penetrated to the highest in the land - elected or unelected.
In America, an elected h-of-s inspired a whole movement, without actually having to pick up trash: Litter Free Inauguration 2009:
"Litter Free Inauguration was conceived by a group of young people inspired by Barack Obama's message of change. Through a new media campaign we will spread this idea to all Inaugural attendees, and keep our National Mall clean. This is a new era for civic participation and personal responsibility, and we hope this is just the beginning."
Litter Free have their own website. No need anymore for newspapers whose writing style distracts some from appreciating the truth.

It makes for good PR though: Do your duty, do a duke!

January 26th, 2010 7:19pm Report this commentI can't imagine the contortions of doublethink one has to indulge in to call oneself a libertarian monarchist. Equality! Liberty! Freedom! Bowing and scraping in front of some chinless fool in buckled slippers! Wait, what?
