Not to trivialise the story too much, but if this ain't the headline** in every British newspaper tomorrow then, damn it, the subs should be ashamed of themselves.
*So far & thankfully & given the size (8.8) of the quake anyway. UPDATE Sunday 7pm: It seems, sadly, that more lives have been lost than had first been thought. So, consider this flippancy withdrawn.
**And no, it doesn't matter that it may be based on myth. As another man said, "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend".

February 27th, 2010 3:26pm Report this commentIts incredible the difference in effect between Haiti and Chile. The quake in Chile was 8.8 magnitude and the initial quake in Haiti was 7.
Given its a logarithmic scale Chile is likely to have 100th as many deaths from a quake nearly 100 times as powerful.
A little wealth and some half decent building codes and are amazing thing.
