Amidst all the Dylanmania this week it's worth recalling that Steve Earle once said, "Townes van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that." He may be forgiven his touch of hyperbole. Nevertheless, To Live is to Fly is one hell of a song and here it is done by the Cowboy Junkies:

Well, about 40% of the Cowboy Junkies anyway...

An earlier Cowboy Junkies album 'The Caution Horses' is one of my all-time favourites, though sadly, they have gone badly downhill in the past few years.
This seems to be the way of most artists: their early work proves to be the best in the long run.

nice lyrics, Alex, in part very touching, true, the tune misses something though, for me anyway, but then my tastes are quite pedestrian.
