Oh Jonathan, how you disappoint me! Newt Gingrich's "rise" in the polls means almost nothing. It certainly does not warrant being treated as a serious political phenomenon for the obvious and excellent reason that Newt isn't going to be the next Republican nominee. He just isn't.
It would be an act of all-but unprecedented folly to select a man certain to send Obama coasting to a second term. Indeed, the more obvious it is that Obama is vulnerable so "electability" will become a mind-concentrating factor for GOP voters. I need hardly remind you that this is bad news for Newt.
More to the point, remember when candidates such as Steve Forbes and Pat Buchanan actually won caucuses and primaries? That's something Newt and Herman and the other entertainers have never done and most probably never will. But Steve Forbes didn't last very long as a credible presidential candidate and dollars to donuts Newt won't either.
Indeed, for every mention of Jon Huntsman here please read Newt Gingrich. That is all. People should, like, calm down.
I think Rick Perry's campaign is badly holed but he's still the guy with the best, if sinking, chance of stopping Mitt Romney. Newt? Forget about it. It's fun but it's not serious.
