From Michelle Obama’s speech on Monday night to Barack Obama’s acceptance address the ‘dignity of work’ was one of the key themes of this convention. This emphasis on work is an attempt to say I share your values to blue collar voters, a group with whom Obama has had particular difficulty.
Obama’s life-story is hard for a lot of voters to relate to. He grew up outside the contiguous United States and struggled with the kind of identity issues that most people have never had to think about. All this makes it harder for voters to feel that they know what Obama’s gut instincts are. The emphasis on work, along with that on fatherhood and the importance of the family, is a way of dispelling the impression that he is just another big government, 1970 or 80s style liberal. Expect to hear a lot more from Obama on these topics between now and November 4th.

But something for you to remember, James, as you keep revisiting your mistake, is, foreign policy is not within the remit of the Vice President. Not even close. The closest the VP gets to foreign policy is representing the President at the funerals of foreign statesmen.
