The fight for Obama's friendship

Wednesday, 5th November 2008

No man on Earth has more new best friends that a President-elect – especially the first black Commander-in-Chief, a walking charisma machine, swept to victory by a nation longing for change and hope. Nick Robinson’s fisk of some of the remarks made by British politicians in the past twelve hours is unimprovable. Brown sees Obama as a  prospective centre-Left ally in his Plan to Save the World; Cameron salutes the new Novice-in-Chief on his way to the White House as a comrade in the battle for change. Which British party leader will do a better job of claiming to be Barack’s spiritual brother? I have no idea. But it is going to be richly entertaining watching them try.

When Blair and his NuLabour gang were elected in 1997 we gave him the benefit of the doubt and wished him well. It was against our better judgement but we did so nonetheless. We were disappointed but not surprised to be. I fear that it will be the same story in America but with worldwide consequences.

Obama is likely to be Jimmy Carter Mk II. One can only hope (vainly, I fear) that he will be reined in by the responsibility of power. With luck, a one term President.

I wonder what will become of Sarah Palin. You can get odds of 11/2 on her in 2012 this morning. This time around she was was the victim of the vilest kind of misogyny and a leftist media feeding frenzy, especially by her own sex. Older, wiser, tempered by events. We can only hope.

In the short term I can see Cameron gaining more, it undermines the novice argument etc.

However in the long-run, having a black liberal democrat, probably the most left of centre president since carter, in the white house is not going to benefit the tories.

Labour will be the long-term winners from this election

So, Samantha says "David Cameron is no Barack Obama!". We should be grateful for small mercies.

David Cameron is no Barack Obama!
Oh too too too true Samantha.
Fortunately with Gordon Brown we already have his splitting image.

And so the age of dhimmitude for Britain begins in earnest.

I`m just waiting for the Prince of Wales to claim him.

Might I humbly suggest that it is Obama who should lay down his credentials for friendship with Cameron, not t'other way round. I can understand why Brown would embrace him, they are striving for the same ugly statist Utopia. One fervently hopes that David Cameron has a different target with saner routes on the way to the Spaces of Freedom.
