Can McCain seal the deal?

Sunday, 27th January 2008

I’m at Columbia airport preparing to head down to Florida for the Republican primary which could be decisive in their race. McCain and Romney are in an intense battle for first and the polling has the race dead even. McCain got a huge boost yesterday with the endorsement of Florida’s popular Republican Governor Charlie Crist but Romney is flooding the state with ads. Rudy Giuliani who bet everything on the state is a distant third.

If McCain wins the Sunshine State, he is in an incredibly strong position going into Super Tuesday. He will have effectively knocked out Rudy and can expect most of his voters—who are generally either national security hawks or those who want a strong leader—to come to him, on top of that he’ll have the big ‘mo and Mike Huckabee pulling social conservatives away from Romney.  However, if Romney wins the situation becomes far more clouded with Romney able to use his personal fortune to compete in pretty much every state on Super Tuesday, McCain would then have a fight and a half on his hands.

While my 33/1 bet made on McCain last Summer ties me to his coat-tails, I was extraordinarily impressed by Romney in the H.Hampshire Republican debate. As it looks like being one or t'other after Florida (unless Giuliani does a NH Hillary on the pollsters) it could very well mean that only a max of three go into Super Tuesday. In that case where the the other towel-throwing two/three place their support could be critical. Given the animosity Romney has aroused with his early tactics, this could, I guess, put McCain over the top. However, who would be best to beat Clinton, I'm not too sure it wouldn't be Romney. Sure makes UK politics boring.
