Why Mitt Romney won't be McCain's VP
Yesterday, Mike Huckabee and John McCain reunited to campaign together in Arkansas and reminded the reporters travelling with them of old times by making Mitt Romney the butt of their jokes as they did so many times during the primaries. Huckabee, to laughter from McCain, declared that: “You know for me, the fortunate thing is I don’t have to go around and unsay anything I said during the campaign”. The contrast here is with Romney who has had to backtrack on his previous criticisms of McCain and his comment that “I’m not going to be being any vice president to John McCain”.
In many ways, Romney makes sense as a VP pick. He would help McCain in the swing state of Michigan and with fundraising as well as adding some managerial and domestic policy heft to the ticket. But McCain still seems to enjoy a joke at Romney’s expense rather too much to share a ticket with him.

April 27th, 2008 3:29amIsn't it amazing that with everything Romney has sacrificed and done to help McCain get elected that this is the way McCain thanks him? McCain is very lucky that Mitt is a class act and will continue to support the Republican candidate for the good of the country. I used to want Mitt as VP but seeing how McCain behaves I think it would be best for Romney to serve in another capacity and then run again for President in 2012. I don't think Romney should tarnish his image by being partnered with McCain.

April 27th, 2008 10:33amIt was obvious during the debates that McCain does not like Romney at all. Just the way he looked at him on the stage was enough to see that. That alone is good enough reason not to put Romney on the ticket. But Romney would undo one of McCain's strengths, something else that became obvious during the debates. McCain is an alpha male; Romney is a beta. You could see that from the way he would look pleadingly at the moderator when asked a difficult question, or one of his points was rebutted. And I don't see any positives. Romney wouldn't carry Michigan, and he never polled strong in the primaries.

April 27th, 2008 4:04pmAs I recall I posted some months ago that Romney would in many ways be an excellent VP choice and that political necessity sometimes made strange bedfellows. I still think, though, that it would make most sense for McCain to see the Democrat line up before making his choice and as the Democrat convention comes first he has, to an extent at least, time on his side.
