Talk about a silly question

Wednesday, 21st May 2008

Jonathan Martin posts up a newspaper ad from the Republican Jewish Coalition which asks a series of questions about Obama’s position on the Middle East. The first one is spectacularly dumb:

“In an interview, you called for a summit of Muslim nations, including Iran and Syria, but excluding Israel. Why?”
To which the obvious answer is, because Israel is not a Muslim country. Now, you can make an argument about whether it is right to segregate countries by religion like this—does secular Turkey qualify as a Muslim state or what about India which has the world’s second largest Muslim population yet is a Hindu-majority country—but complaining about Israel not being invited to a summit for Muslim nations is ridiculous.

I can't agree with you here James.

1) Many of these Muslim dictatorships only stay in power because they direct the anger of their oppressed peoples onto Israel. Helping them work together will just help them attack Israel more efficiently.

2)Fostering the notion that these Muslim nations can just continue to ignore Israel forever until Israel is eventually wiped out is very dangerous. The Middle East will never progress until Israel is included.

3) I don't think "spectacularly dumb" is a phrase you should use. It is condescending and insulting. You have made no effort at all to understand why the question was asked = bad journalism.

"If you can keep your head while all about you are losing theirs, then you just don't understand the problem."

Think you're missing the point here Jonathan. Israel cannot be included in a summit of Muslim nations as it is not a majority Muslim state.

Agree that Israel cannot be excluded from a broader dialogue - as happily seems to be happening with Syria at present - but that was not the question being asked of Obama.

What twisted logic !

It's like saying it is silly to object to burglary, though whether it is right in principle is arguable.

Why not have a conference of white nations excluding non-white ones?

No complaints from James.

Within Israel's pre-1967 borders, the most popular name for new baby boys is now Muhammad.

David Lindsay:

So Mohammad is the most popular name with the 1967 borders of Israel?

Big deal.

Is Neville Chamberlain not the most poplar name for boys in Britian?
