Cross-dressing Soviets

Wednesday, 16th August 2006

Contrary to popular opinion, there is more to Soviet ballet than choreographic propaganda. There is humour, too. Obviously, it is an appropriately purged and carefully planned comedy, rich in political overtones. But it can be fun none the less. Not to mention the fact that some of it has stood the test of time admirably and maintained its unique freshness. Take, for instance, The Bright Stream, presented by the Bolshoi Ballet as one of the eagerly awaited novelties of its 2006 London season.
