John Cornwell in his fascinating new study reveals that 600,000 Catholics defect to protestantism each year in Brazil, that only seven per cent of French Catholics bother to go to church, that 50 per cent of Europe's Catholic parishes do not even have a priest, that up to 58 per cent of Catholic priests struggle to suppress lurking homosexual desires and that, according to an NBC survey, seven per cent of them are having to deal with personal aspirations of a paedophilic nature.
