Henry Ponsonby was Queen Victoria's private secretary from 1870 until his death in 1895. He lived through three Reform Acts, not to mention service with the Grenadiers in the Crimea, and witnessed from a privileged position the transformation, on a huge scale, of the public and private lives of the Queen's subjects.
