Bicycle-racing is a very un-British sport. Many of those who take part in it - the Belgians are apparently the worst offenders - are said to suffer from a 'neurosis' or 'killer instinct'. In their keenness to win, many cyclists have pedalled themselves into a state of extinction. And many, as we know only too well, have also resorted to using banned substances to improve their chances of success.
