This is the first serious work to deal in a thorough fashion with the incompetence, nepotism and waste that have defined New Labour in government. It shows how Tony Blair and Gordon Brown have disregarded the civil service and instead placed their faith in a rackety collection of management and IT systems consultants. The result has been a prodigious waste of public money. To list just a handful of the disasters cited in this book: the new system for magistrates courts is £200 million over budget and massively behind schedule; GCHQ is £400 million over the original £21 million budget; benefit cards were scrapped after £698 million had been wasted.
