Just because...

Peter Hoskin 1:19pm

...there are plenty of Best Albums/Songs of the Decade/Year lists around at the moment, I figured I'd give MGMT's Oracular Spectacular a quick mention.

Sure, you've probably heard it already: after all, it was the NME's pick for Album of the Year in 2008, and features prominently in their twin end-of-the-decade lists.  But, listening to it now, as 2009 winds to a close, it seems to encapsulate so much that was right with the last ten years in music – from the ethereal electropop of Goldfrapp, to the sheer musical density of Muse; from the continent-hopping beats of MIA, to the lyrical playfulness of a Mike Skinner or an Alex Turner – while also tossing in a few tricks of its own.

So while it may not be The Album of The Decade, it could well be one of the Best Albums For This Decade.  Here's the video for track 3, The Youth, by way of a toast:

So much of contemporary popular music seems to be a pastiche of what has gone before. This piece struck me as being no exception.

Having said that, I would also say that I should listen to more new music. I'm afraid that I've got myself into a rut with my own CD collection. I suppose the answer is to simply switch on the radio...^^

Pete- Oracular Spectacular is indeed an album of shimmering wonderfulness but unlike The NME, Fleet Foxes first effort was the album of 2008 for me with Bon Iver a close second (Was In Rainbows 2007?) ..I'm compiling my top ten albums of 2009 right now, it's not been a vintage year but The XX and Warm Heart of Africa, The Invisible , Speech Debelle, Fever Ray, Kronos Quartet all stand out along with Bob and The Hyperdub compilation

Next year is already shaping up to be cracker with new offerings from my band of the decade LCD Soundsystem along with Fleet Foxes, Goldfrapp, Vampire Weekend and If we're really lucky a new Burial album.

Jeremy - Just get yourself a Spotify account and go and listen to all the cool music you want - There's tons of great new music out there just check out my recommendations for a starters.
