Bringing classical music to younger audiences
David Blackburn 6:03pm
The historical haunt of grunge and occasional venue for acid house, The Roundhouse in Camden will host a series of dynamic events to disprove the belief that anyone under 50 loathes classical music. Reverb at the Roundhouse will feature everything from, Beethoven to the contemporary John Cage.
This will work. As Jessica Duchen notes in the Independent, ‘Young people know when they are being patronised. They don’t like having good music being dumbed down supposedly to make it more appealing.’ Man of the moment Vladimir Jurowski will be conducting one of the concerts, and whilst his interpretation of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony will be novel, to put it mildly, it will not be ‘dumbed down’. Like Casanova’s Chinese Restaurant, it’s impossible to have a bad evening at the Roundhouse, often in spite of the line-up and clientele. Once I enjoyed an evening of Pete Doherty there - extraordinary.

We don't speak of classical novels and classical poems, do we? self evidently most good art was produced by people a long time dead. Is there anyone living who is the equal of Henry Purcell? No there bloody isn't.ogn
