The good doctor

David Blackburn 5:27pm

OK, you all know by now that we love Mad Men. The current series might have got off to a sluggish start, but it’s still the best drama series on television, probably the best ever. There will be no more debate about that on these pages, no more from me at any rate. So to while away the long winter hours we've got to look for the second best. I’ll get the ball rolling: House is right up there.

Hugh Laurie receives deserved plaudits for his constantly brilliant performance as the Sherlock Holmes inspired Dr Gregory House. Remote and misanthropic, drug-dependent and intellectually paranormal, the parallels between Conan Doyle’s hero and Laurie’s character are plain and equally compelling. House has placed the confessedly bemused and apparently retiring Laurie into the limelight and the unthinkable has happened: Bertie Wooster is an international sex symbol. Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Daniel Craig, none of these can hold a candle to the fascinations of Mr Laurie. Well, perhaps not but you get my drift.

House and Laurie have won 2 Golden Globes each and the show is now six series old. All things must come to an end. Conan Doyle received death threats when he sent Holmes to his death over the Reichenbach falls. Does David Shore, House’s creator, face a similar future?

No, House the show and the character are in rude health. There will be no Reichenbach Falls for at least two more series - Laurie is signed on until at least Series 8. The writers are still creating compelling, genre-busting drama, executed with precision and skill by the cast and crew. Long may it continue.

Two Golden Globes must constitute one pair of...baubles.

Personally, I think that Blackadder was much better than House and that Laurie was much better in it - in spite of its leftwards list and the nasty way in which it traduced Good Queen Bess...

I dare say that even Jeeves and Wooster would make for more rewarding viewing than House....but it's probably being done for the moneybags. Not that I blame Mr Laurie for that. I imagine that he has a family to look after and children to educate...

House in rude health? The show? Not really, I'm afraid, if they keep rolling the Huddy soap opera drama - if they find back to their roots the show will do fine for many years thought. We'll have to wait and see if they correct their recent mistakes (getting rid of Cameron and thus the original team, this insane focus on a really annoying ship, i.e. Huddy, and the increasing soap operaish look). I hope for it!
