We spent the last fortnight in Port-Vendres, south of Perpignan. While next-door Collioure - home to the Fauves - draws the throngs of visitors, P-V gets on with the job of being a working port with some lively restaurants and bars attached. We loved it, and we also discovered the place has a painterly connection too, in the unlikely shape of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
What did we miss while we were away? Well, apparently, Britain did well at the Olympics, although you'd never have guessed from the television coverage. Being close to the border, we had to rely on the Spanish channel TVE2 for highlights from Beijing. Anyone who had to sit though the wall-to-wall jingoism would never dream of complaining about the Beeb again. To judge by the output, you would have thought the only non-Spaniards to do well were a swimmer called Phelps and some lanky runner from Jamaica.
