Norman who? People who aren't Tamla junkies may not be familiar with Norman Whitfield's name, yet there's a fair chance they'll have danced to his music at some point or other. "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "Cloud Nine", "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone"... the hits were endless. I can't believe he's gone. Dorian Lynskey supplies a fine appreciation. Although I linked to the original, non-Marvin Gaye chart version of "Grapevine" quite a while ago, the song I love most of all is "I Can't Get Next to You", a number that makes contemporary soul and hip-hop look painfully flat-footed. The Disney animation on this clip is weird, but it works pretty well.
