His guilty secret

Monday, 29th September 2008

And one of mine too... The arts editor of the Daily Telegraph can't get excited about the latest exhibition of the moment:

I have never felt such a philistine as when I went to the private view of the Rothko exhibition at Tate Modern. I just didn't get it. It was like being an atheist at holy communion. I have always been an unbeliever, or at least an agnostic, when it comes to Rothko. I have been to the Rothko room at the Tate more than once, but have never felt the sense of illumination that so many people describe... The Tate makes an attempt to render the paintings more interesting by showing how they were built up layer by layer. But the final result is what counts, and a dull colour on top of a dull colour makes another dull colour.
