Ambassadorial

Tuesday, 7th October 2008

Andrew Gilligan isn't wild about the idea of shifting the American embassy south of the river. For some reason, only part of his Evening Standard column is on-line, but here's his conclusion:
The US Embassy's planned move to a high-security site at Nine Elms will have important consequences. Without chi-chi restaurants for entertaining contacts nearby, the diplomats' expense bills will collapse. And that is not a wholly frivolous point. One of the main purposes of diplomacy is to mix with the people and live the life of the country you're in. Now America's legendary incomprehension of foreigners can only grow.
