The debate

Wednesday, 8th October 2008

Talk about skewed perceptions. I wasn't planning to watch the event live, but a bout of insomnia found me dragging myself down the stairs for the foreign policy segment. Strangely enough, I thought McCain came across as more relaxed and, yes, presidential: it almost got to the point where I had to calm my nerves by mumbling the mantra "Sarah Palin" over and over, just to remind myself where I stand. Obama seemed a little flat, and I was surprised that he made so many  verbal slips (he got the Afghan and Iraqi governments muddled at one point). Then, after all that, I watched the pundits talk about how McCain failed to rise to the occasion on domestic issues - which are obviously what matter most right now. And then the first crushing poll figures came in.

PS  One of Ann Althouse's commenters digs into the transcript in an attempt to settle the argument over  who  mentioned the middle classes most:

Middle class: Obama 3, McCain 0
Middle-income Obama 0, McCain 3
Poor: not found
Poverty: not found
