Just as a postscript to Stephen's lament about the expensive squalor of theatreland, the other evening I was walking past The Palace, home to "Spamalot", where a cheerful posse of skateboarders was using the foyer steps as a practice area. No one was moving them on. I don't suppose the audience could hear the racket, but let's just say it looked a bit tacky (Much like a lot of Charing Cross Road, to be honest.)
As for Hammersmith Apollo ( the Odeon as was), yes, it does feel like you're sitting in the world's largest ash-tray. That's not necessarily a problem if you're there for a rock gig, but it still wouldn't hurt the management to invest in a dustpan and brush and a few gallons of paint.
