Make-believe

Friday, 24th October 2008

The minute I saw that photo of the young McCain volunteer who is supposed to have had a letter "B" carved in her face by a black assailant, I thought of Anne Tyler's early  novel "A Slipping-Down Life".  It's about a teenage girl who's so infatuated with the leader of a local rock band that she carves his name in her forehead; unfortunately, she forgets that using a mirror to do the deed creates certain basic complications. It doesn't say a lot for Matt Drudge's judgment that he ran the original story so prominently.

Talking of fabrications, Anne Althouse's post  on Rush Limbaugh's latest outpourings about Obama's emergency visit to Hawaii is worth a read, especially as Althouse is normally a bit of a Limbaugh fan:

Rush quickly flings one thing and then another and doesn't bother to link things up before he moves on. But it's apparent from the transcript that he means for you to think that Obama doesn't really care about his grandmother (or anyone else in his family) and that his trip to Hawaii was no sign of affection for his grandmother at all, but evidence that he's engaged in a cover-up of evidence that would show he's doesn't meet the constitutional requirement that the President must be a natural-born citizen.
Contemptible, absolutely contemptible.
