Not fading away

Sunday, 9th November 2008

Listening to the Remembrance ceremony on the radio was somehow more moving than usual this time. Maybe it's because I've just started reading David Kynaston's history of  austerity Britain that all the different sounds, culminating in the Last Post,  seemed so much more evocative.  Normally, I can't bear Nicholas Witchell and his unctuous, Buckingham Palace tone. Today, he just seemed just right.
