Concert of the month, so far

Thursday, 13th November 2008

For some reason, Angola's Waldemar Bastos is still a marginal figure in world music. Although Talking Head David Byrne nudged him into the limelight  - "Pretaluz", released on Byrne's Luaka Bop label, is a gem -  there's so much coverage of West Africa at the moment that other regions tend to be overlooked. Despite the modest turn-out, Bastos's QEH date was exhilarating, blending the best of Africa and Brazil. His songs remind me of the sort of joyous, border-crossing melodies that come out of another ex-Portuguese colony, Cape Verde.
