The hottest act in world music right now, I suppose, is the Malian duo of Amadou & Mariam. Unfortunately, I've never been able to work up much enthusiasm for them, whether live or on record. It would be nice to think the new album, "Welcome to Mali", might do the trick, but so far I'm struggling. I don't mind admitting that the opening track, "Sabali" is just about the most irritating thing I've heard since The Human League. Ah, well. Is it because I'm not enough of a rocker?
