Stardust memories

Wednesday, 16th May 2007

That little disagreement with Stephen about The Lives of Others set me thinking about all the other films I've seen that have been criminally over-rated. Here's a list off the top of my head. I've left out Pulp Fiction because I've already had a moan about it:

My Beautiful Launderette
Venus
The Conformist
Distant Voices, Still Lives
Casino Royale

Big Night
Heat
The Usual Suspects
Crimes & Misdemeanours
Gosford Park

Plus just about anything by Almodovar. There's also a movie which was so annoying that I've succeeded in erasing the title from my memory. It was about a gang of medieval engineers who dig an immense tunnel into the centre of the earth, and finally emerge in the middle of a motorway. Or something like that. It was highly praised by the critics, and it sent me into a near-coma one night at the Gate in Notting Hill.

Of course, The English Patient is in a class of its own as far as hype is concerned.
