British vs American health care, pt 2

Tuesday, 9th December 2008

Ezra Klein compares and contrasts how much we spend:

The difference between UK and America could buy every American 5.3 ounces of pure gold per year... Who has better outcomes is like Camry vs. Accord. Some things are better on one car, some things are worse. But if you paid 15,000 for your Camry, and I paid $22,000 for my Accord, then in fact the Camry is MUCH better.
And here's a response to Andrew Sullivan from an expatriate friend of mine who works at the top end of the US financial sector:
It is beyond debate. Think of this bald fact: all of us well-insured recipients of ultra-high quality private health care (include myself and, no doubt, Sullivan) are one job cut away from potential disaster. One. If I lost my job, I would have interim cover (at quite some $) for a few months, but if I failed to find another job with insurance, my family would be completely exposed. The cost of healthcare if uninsured is otherwise utterly unsustainable for even a moderately well-off family. We would simply move back to the UK.
