Notebook

Saturday, 19th May 2007

His most important article was among his first, a savage review of Ayn Rand's novel 'Atlas Shrugged',  a follow-up to the author's best-selling 'The Fountainhead' and, like it, a declaration of the author's philosophy of objectivism, much in vogue among conservative libertarians. Chambers was appalled. "The book's dictatorial tone is much its most striking feature," he wrote. "Out of a lifetime of reading, I can recall no other book in which a tone of overriding arrogance was so implacably sustained. Its shrillness is without reprieve. Its dogmatism is without appeal... From almost any page of 'Atlas Shrugged', a voice can be heard, from painful necessity, commanding: 'To a gas chamber - go!'"
Rand did not read the review but was furious. So were many readers. "Chambers the Christian Communist," wrote one, is far more dangerous than Chambers the Russian spy."
Sam Tanenhaus, Whittaker Chambers.
