His most important article was among his first, a savage review of Ayn Rand's novel 'Atlas Shrugged',  a follow-up to the author's best-selling 'The Fountainhead' and, like it, a declaration of the author's philosophy of objectivism, much in vogue among conservative libertarians. Chambers was appalled. "The book's dictatorial tone is much its most striking feature," he wrote. "Out of a lifetime of reading, I can recall no other book in which a tone of overriding arrogance was so implacably sustained. Its shrillness is without reprieve. Its dogmatism is without appeal... From almost any page of 'Atlas Shrugged', a voice can be heard, from painful necessity, commanding: 'To a gas chamber - go!'"
Rand did not read the review but was furious. So were many readers. "Chambers the Christian Communist," wrote one, is far more dangerous than Chambers the Russian spy."
