Spending four or five hours at the Barbican is about as much fun as being holed up at Stansted Airport during the Easter crush. Still, I did manage to keep my spirits up during the Radio 3 World Music Awards. Laudable though the annual ceremony may be, I'm still not convinced it really belongs on the classical network. That relentless DJ party ambience always grates on me. And given that the pop quota seems to increase each year, it would probably all sound a lot more plausible on Radio 2. But then I suppose the ratings would be too low to make it worthwhile. If you care to join in, R3 listeners are debating the pros and cons on their message board.
PS: The ethereal Souad Massi wasn't nominated this year, but I don't need an excuse to listen to Raoui one more time.
