The economy & the crime rate

Thursday, 8th January 2009

Next time anyone, Left or Right,  suggests there's a straightforward link between the health of the economy and law-breaking, send them in the direction of James Q. Wilson's op-ed in the LA Times. An advocate of the "broken windows" theory, Wilson knows more about the subject of criminality than just about anyone on the planet. (I like this line from his Wikipedia entry: "Wilson describes himself as 'more conservative than most academics but more liberal than the country as a whole.'") He's now chairing an inquiry by the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Law and Justice to examine exactly why crime rates change. But even he seems overwhelmed by known unknowns. Better policing clearly makes a difference, he says. But his final line? "If you have any good ideas, let me know."
