Harry's Place contributor David T. e-mails me in response to Jeremy Greenstock's claim that the destruction of Israel is not a formal part of the Islamists' programme:
His argument rests on the fact that Hamas did not run for election on the precise terms of the Hamas Covenant 1988. Neither, for that matter, did Labour republish its constitution in the last British election. That doesn't mean that the Labour Party Constitution has been abandoned.
There are, however, countless examples of senior Hamas leaders and cleric re-iterating the position of the Hamas Covenant. The most pertinent is this: "After voting in the Gaza Strip, Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar said the group "will not change a single word in its covenant" calling for the destruction of Israel. "
David explains in more detail over at HP. Norm Geras joins in.The Hamas Covenant is a huge embarrassment to Hamas supporters, and FCO Arabists. Were this really the philosophical basis that underpins Hamas' politics, it would be very difficult for anybody but the most rabid racists and genocidaires to support it.
