John Updike, RIP
Awful, awful news. I haven't had a chance to digest the obituaries yet, but I hope that, along with the Rabbit sequence, there's some recognition for his beautifully rendered memoir "Self-Consciousness", a loosely structured collection of reminiscences about his Pennsylvania youth, his evolving sense of craftsmanship, his psoriasis, his stammer and above all his anguished stance on Vietnam (published as the essay "On Not Being a Dove".)
