Listening to the Five Live phone-in for the past half-hour, I've been getting more and more depressed. On the one hand are the people who think Carol Thatcher deserved to be sacked for using the word "golliwog" off-air, even though we don't yet know the full context of the conversation in the green room. And then there are the white callers - and at least one black woman as well, to be fair - who don't see anything wrong with golliwogs in the first place. (Something similar happened on this website when Stephen Pollard wrote about the shop window display in Henley.) There was even one, who presumably has been living in a hole in the ground for the past thirty years, who still doesn't understand why the Black & White Minstrels were offensive.
All credit to the presenters for trying to keep the debate on course.
