Notebook

Wednesday, 4th February 2009

One of the unsolved mysteries of the universe, and a matter I find it harder to speculate on than such relatively straightforward problems as Free Will or Life After Death, is why on earth Ronnie Bullingham was ever made an Old Bailey  judge. It's not his fault that he has a thick, heavily veined neck and the complexion of a beetroot past its first youth; his personal habits such as picking his teeth and searching in his ear with his little finger while on the bench I can forgive, and his unreasoning prejudice against all black persons, defence lawyers and probation officers I can mercifully attribute to some deep psychological cause. Perhaps the Bull's mother, if such a person can be imagined, was assaulted by a black probation officer who was on his way to give evidence for the defence.
John Mortimer, "Rumpole and the Learned Friends".
