Celebrating the Fourth

Wednesday, 4th July 2007

I'm off to a friend's barbecue soon, rain permitting. It's not looking promising at the moment.

UPDATE:  The flag flies outside Jo's house. Rain didn't quite stop play.

Bryan Appleyard, meanwhile, alerts everyone to the fact that Dave Barry is spending the big day over here in Britain. As ever, the humorist is making the best of things:

The weather is alternating between summer and winter, changing radically about every 20 minutes. This is pretty much how London always seems to me, but the Londoners seem to find it unusually bad this year.

Travel Tip: If you plan to come over here, bring plenty of extra organs to sell, because the US dollar is completely worthless.

As my little gesture to America's birthday, here's a terrific guide to some of the country's greatest pianists - from Scott Joplin to the Lisztian showman, Louis Moreau Gottschalk -  performed by the endlessly versatile Dick Hyman, music consultant on many a Woody Allen film. The interviewer is Russell Davies, and the second instalment of the programme can be found here.
