Diana called for me and we went to the Tate to see the Stanley Spencer exhibition where I should have liked to linger but she rushed, missing the point and thinking him quaint and whimsical, where I see him realistic and proletarian, with the remnants of nineteenth-century non-conformity such as Betjeman has popularized.
