Music blogger Jessica Duchen - who's now found a niche at Standpoint magazine - tries to escape the sound of an open-air pop concert being held at Kew Gardens. That's more than two miles away from where she lives:
Well, I think she'd be safe in the company of Cohen and Rhymin' Simon, but I'm still with her on this one. If, as she points out, even the London Philharmonic receives regular visits from volume-conscious Health & Safety staff, how do so many rock venues get away with inflicting tinnitus on those of us who've forgotten to bring our ear-plugs?Often when music is intrusively loud you hear only the bass. If you can also hear the melody, it must be b****y loud... I enjoy plenty of pop music and hanker to hear live performances by favourite singer-songwriters such as Annie Lennox, Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, Tanita Tikaram et al - but I don't go, because I do not want to damage my ears. Why is there some unwritten law that if you go to a pop concert, you must risk the health of your hearing in the future in order to be cool?
