Europe, past & present

Monday, 20th July 2009

Author Kenan Malik takes issue with Christopher Caldwell's polemic on immigration and Islam:

"Reflections on the Revolution in Europe" is trenchantly written and robustly argued. It is complex and often subtle. It is also fundamentally wrong in both premise and conclusion... There are no such things as ‘European values’, of course. What has eroded is faith in the idea that it is possible to win peoples of different backgrounds to a common set of secular, humanist, Enlightened values.
Caldwell himself has an interesting piece in the London Review of Books on the storm in France caused by a book attacking arch-interventionist Bernard Kouchner:
The book hit Paris like a bomb. Kouchner accused Péan of anti-semitism and rallied celebrity friends to defend him... "Le Monde selon K." is a brave and important book: though intemperate, frequently unfair and sometimes slapdash, it levels charges against Kouchner’s militarised humanitarianism that demand an answer – and neither Kouchner nor any of his defenders has yet provided one.
