Notebook

Wednesday, 2nd April 2008

American students take the community-building project extremely seriously, sometimes, perhaps, too seriously: a low level of hysteria sometimes prevails, and minor issues easily erupt into campus-wide dramas, filling bulletin boards, conversations and student newspapers for months at a time. But that notion of a jointly created community is one that is dear to me, and that is what seemed most lacking at Oxford. Oxford micro-manages student lives when it comes to rules about gowns, examinations, meal-times, and so on. But when it comes to the big issues - how shall we live together? How shall we create an atmosphere in which people can learn and thrive? - Oxford is strangely silent. The dons seem to regard these as irrelevant concerns, and students follow their lead.

Rosa Ehrenreich, "A Garden of Paper Flowers: An American at Oxford".
