After I left school, belief gradually declined, lapsing into agnosticism and finally converting to atheism in a moment of conviction, which struck me with great clarity, and no obvious trigger, as I was driving homeward one morning past Luton on the M1. I mention that detail to establish that "revelation" works both ways.
