An American looks at Boris

Tuesday, 6th May 2008

The doyen of poll-crunchers, Michael Barone considers the implications of the mayoral victory:

Johnson has managed to unite the toffs of Kensington and Chelsea with the estuary English and anything-but-fashionable hard-liners of the northeast suburbs. He has also made great inroads among those high-income, high-minded folk who have been voting Liberal Democrat for Parliament and many local offices.

Interesting, though, that Barone doesn't write off Gordon Brown's chances of recovering in the next two years. Voters, he says, are in as volatile a frame of mind as when he first began following UK politics in the early Sixties.
