That poll

Wednesday, 14th May 2008

The results are in from The Debatable Land's quest to find the most over-rated and under-rated American presidents. Ronald Reagan and Dwight D. Eisenhower came top in the respective categories. (Which is exactly the choice I made, as it happens.) Alex Massie is at pains to stress that his voting sample was fairly evenly divided between Left and Right. Perhaps he should do one on prime ministers next.

Most over-rated prime minister: Harold 'Supermac' Macmillan - whose paternalistic desire to do good by the working man blinded him to the true nature of the trades union militancy enveloping Britain during the 1950s/1960s.

Most under-rated: John Major - despite in 1992 winning the largest popular vote of any prime minister ever, thanks to tactical voting by LibDems this sadly translated into a miniscule parliamentary majority that left him vulnerable to backbench rebellions and media mischieve-making. Yet, even so, he managed to press on with those bits of the Thatcherite agenda that the Lady herself never quite got round to.
Okay, so he was the architect of Britain's misbegotten ERM policy, but at least he quickly came to appreciate that, once ejected from it, there was great virtue in staying out.

I noticed that Carter and Johnson are held to be under-rated. Did the people who voted in this poll actually have to live under these two disasters? Count me as unimpressed by polls as per usual.
