Not that I'm trying to win myself a spell in the Tower of London, but I notice there's an awful lot about the royal photographer in the papers at the moment. What's always puzzled me is that I find his portraits totally forgettable. (Much like Annie Leibowitz's.) The one I've looked at most lately is his photo of Kingsley Amis, which adorns the cover of the writer's memoirs. Again, it's just dull. Or perhaps I'm missing something? The one society artist - if you can call him that - who does appeal to me is Meredith Frampton: there's real flesh and blood behind the austere poses.
