Sarko's faces

Thursday, 3rd July 2008

When I got home late last night I switched on TV5 to watch his choked-up speech greeting the release of hostage Ingrid Betancourt. Perhaps I'm a softy, but I was quite touched. Arthur Goldhammer takes a much more sceptical view of the whole affair. As for Charles Bremner, he's been savouring a glimpse of the president waiting to go on air to discuss his plans for the EU.  "It shows the unvarnished Sarko that journalists see," says Bremner. Is there a touch of Richard Nixon in the air?
