Ray Lewis - the morning after

Saturday, 5th July 2008

The indefatigable Dave Hill reflects on his coverage of the story so far:

Throughout, there have been some quite fine judgments to make about what to include in our pieces and what to leave out. We've chosen not to publish certain extremely solid facts about Lewis's past because making them public might have invited readers to draw conclusions about him that could be unjustifiably damaging or plain false...Predictably, some commenters at Cif and the Politics blog have characterised our coverage as a "smear" campaign. If only they knew. Maybe they'd like to compare the Mail's Lewis story or the Telegraph's with ours and think again.

PooterGeek's photo caption sums up the mess at City Hall, while the normally combative Boris Watch  strikes a melancholy note

...I’m saddened by the Ray Lewis incident. Even disregarding his innocence or guilt, London faces a problem both in attacks and the fear of them, and Boris’s enthusiasm has been directly influenced by his Deputy Mayor for Young People. He may press on with his current plans or he may be forced to return, beleaguered, to the drawing board.
